Cigna Healthcare International Health conducted research on well-being globally, which shows loneliness is highest among Gen Z and Millennials. 46% of individuals surveyed who were aged 18-24 indicated feeling 'left out' of a group of people, versus 43% of individuals aged 25-44. This was compared to only 39% of people globally, highlighting that younger generations are experiencing loneliness at a slightly higher frequency than Boomers and Gen Z. However, this doesn't mean that elder generations are more equipped to manage loneliness.
Loneliness impacts all generations and is linked to lower vitality. Cigna Healthcare measures vitality, also known as the energy and strength that allows people to thrive, through their proprietary Evernorth Vitality Index. The reasons for this vary hugely across demographics and ages. For example, life transitions, such as those becoming empty nesters or caring for an elderly parent, particularly impact those in their mid-forties or fifties. In contrast, Gen Z experiences loneliness due to mental health and financial struggles, while the impact of technology and social media can be overbearing. Read our report on The Future of Health - Gen Z Workplace Benefits which describes the many challenges that this generation faces in relation to their Millennial and Baby Boomer counterparts.
The Cigna Group Loneliness in America report 2025 found 65% of Millennials and 67% of Gen Z individuals in the study were 'lonely', and their demographic has been specifically impacted by technology. In all age groups, loneliness is tied to lower vitality and wellbeing, however the effects of loneliness impact the elder generations more than younger generations.
Aging populations are at high risk for loneliness or isolation due to health , resulting from the changes that come with getting older including hearing loss, physical disability, trouble getting around, and more. However, it becomes all the more important that those who are aging maintain routine and social interactions, as a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, cognitive decline, and more.
The Cigna Group Loneliness in America report 2025 shares those who participate in social engagement activities, such as being part of a religious organisation or doing a club sport, have increased ability to maintain their resilience and mental health. This research cites Millennials as being particularly good at prioritising activities that interest them.
Each generation may experience the symptoms of loneliness through their own lens, but the prescription does not change. It comes down to prioritising social well-being and mental health. Maintaining relationships, making new connections, spending time in nature, and cognitive behavioural therapy can all help with combatting loneliness and addressing the root cause of social isolation.
